Thanks for the info and link on the whitefish.I can honestly say that they aren't as scrappy and wiley as trout and much easier to catch (unless they're side-hooked). Their 'double bump' pattern makes them easy to tell it's a whitey while trout often run and jump. I have never eaten one and should try. We can fish for them all year on the teton but the trout season is over. So you can fish and catch trout 'accidentally' and keep the whities. Still, they're the closest thing to a shit fish around here except for the rarely caught suckers. Def. gonna try to eat one though since I never have. They do get a bad rap, esp. since they are natives. Whitefish Power!

ya, we wanted to try a mountain whitefish. heard both that they were good eatin and were shit. my one bud walks around sayin they are so horrible...so we prepared it same as the trout. ya know how i do w/the spicy dry rub. it looked and came off the bone exactly the same. i thought it was buttery, though did not use any oil or butter...reminded me of crab. after a few more bites, had both on my plate and could tell no difference. check out this link: http://fwp.mt.gov/mtoutdoors/HTML/articles/portraits/whitefish.htm suppose it has to do w/where they are caught. it was caught on the upper des, which is extremely clean water. they fight a lil mo than trout of the same size. i like em...their scales are pearly.
