it is with great shame that today we announce to you the most unprestigious of all fishing derbies, the inaugural brownie troop "freshwater shit fishing derby". This event will take place nationwide and the entry process and rules are as follows:
each entrant must mail 10 dollars of u.s. cash to:
brownie troop fishing show
p.o. box 324
new hope, pa
18938
each entrant will then receive a custom BTFS tape measure via the u.s. mail, your ten dollars covers the cost of the tape measure and postage. The tape measure is nice, it is a 5 foot tape housed in a lovely plastic 3x2 case with our logo on the side. All fish must be photographed with the BTFS tape measure clearly in the frame. Fish will not be judged by weight, only by length alone, any entries not measured with your hand numbered tape will be disqualified. This is to discourage the killing of fish by bringing them to a tackle shop for weigh-ins. There is no reason to trust any of the entrants, myself included, but cheating is discouraged. All fish pictures must be mailed to vealmarsala@gmail.com, although we are starting a forum specifically for this event which can viewed at:
http://brownietroop.ning.com
posting to the derby thread is highly encouraged.
the following fish will be recognized by the governing body (me) as follows:
Sunfish/Bluegill/Perch/Crappie/Rock Bass
Catfish, any species.
Carp
the trophies will be presented as follows:
largest in class (3 seperate trophies)
largest fish overall (wins the grand prize--a brand new Zebco rod and reel combo with hook and bobber starter kit.)
Fishing is unlimited to any body of water of your choosing. There are no restrictions on bait, tackle, or method of fishing. If you want to noodle in a 100lb catfish, then that is your right. The contest will begin upon receipt of your tape measure and end on October 12, 2008. No more entries will be accepted after September 26. the contest will be limited to 200 entrants, the amount of monogrammed tape measures I had printed. Join today, and be a part of the most shameful fishing derby known to mankind.

Thanks for the derby and congrats to the winners! Unfortunately, I got skunked each time I went out. I guess that's what I get for moving recently. I'm still trying to scope out the holes in my new town. Spent over an hour hiking out to what I thought would be the sweet spot yesterday morning, but never even found the water! That will teach me to leave my GPS at home. I'll be more prepared next time!

Thanks Ben - I'm sad too. All those chores piled up and I keep thinking of that Ween lyric off Country Hits..."But the way you're lookin' at me baby, I just can't help but feel the shame" Ben - If you ever come out this way - I'm taking you out on the boat for some fun salt water fishing.

I gave it my all this past week. I went out nearly everyday starting last Sunday. I was determined to at least catch all the fish that were elligible for measuring. I was having dreams of huge fish swirling around trees like serpents, carp in still water the size of redwood logs, even bluegill the size of a VW bug coming up from the depths to swallow me in my yellow kayak like I'm some kind of topwater lure - thats how much this derby has been a part of me. Ben - I couldn't stop hearing "Among His Tribe" in my head as I rooted myself on the stream banks and lake fronts along my shit fish travels. This has been a real spiritual experience, one in which I'd like to pursue more often. You find yourself in places that most people could care less about or places that haven't even been visited by someone in ages. You basically are stirring up the ecosystem and making it something exciting and new for most of these shit fish. They ususally sit around doing their same old thing but then we come a long and throw something new at em' and they have to actually get motivated to move their fins to at least check it out. I think this shit is awesome and I hope Mickey does these derbies more often. My wife was happy to see this derby pass and she's already dreding the next derby. Me I'm ready for derby day in and day out, dirty derby in the brownest of style.
Last week started off with one of my good friends from San Fran staying with me for the weekend and we got to do a whole slew of fishing. We hit the local stream down the street and caught some small bass, chubs and yellow perch. Nothing with any size but fun because its right next to my house. Then we hit the res.for a while, nothing but small bass there. We did see a huge black water snake sunning its self on the rocks, that was really cool. The fucker was at least 2.5' to 3' long.
On Sunday we woke up at 3 AM and packed our shit up and headed to the Wading River to bridge fish for some huge cats.
REAL BIG CAT FISH
Bridge over Wading River in South Jersey at 6:30 AM. The white perch were going nuts at this spot just as we were packing up our gear to fishing in the boat. I will be back for them. This spot was awesome to watch the wildlife do their thing in wee hours before sun rise. TITS!
So after we did well catching a ton of small cats that morning, we then to meet my father in law to do some striper/blue fishing off his boat. We met at the dock at 8 AM and shuved off to go find em. Guys who were out there before sunrise were complaining about tons of bait but NO FISH. Same was for us. We went everywhere looking for some action. We hit 2 reefs up and nothing but sea robins blahhhhh. Occasionally we'd hit some small fluke. After being out there for a few hours we moved back in shore and actually found a bunch of weak fish all about 12" -15"
Yesterday was my attempt to pull in the lead with a nice yellow perch. As soon as I got to the res. I saw it was going to be a lot harder then I expected. I'm sure a lot of you guys have experienced it this last week - the green algae slick that inundates the body of water your fishing. I tried fishing som less affected areas but nothing was taking my bait or lures. I had to resort to plan B. Row the 3/4 mile across the res to the area that was sun baked and had zero algae due to the way the wind was blowing. Finally some action! Started picking off yellow perch! I was getting real excited. One after another bigger then the next. I got to 10" and the bite shut down. Oh well. I was more then amped with the overall out come and just smiled the whole time as I paddled back to the dock as the sunset.
Thanks everyone for making this derby exciting. It takes a whole hearted effort to bring out the competition in everyone. This derby had one commonality, our blood is all the same color on this website, BROWN !!! Cheers to Mickey!! And a big Cheers to the winners!

Thanks everyone! Can't wait for the next derby! This was great fun.
"Cat Cave" is definitely a good name for that place. Congrats Jeff. I was out the night he caught the winner. 3 of us were out from 7pm until about 11:30pm. I left with the other guy around 11:30 and Jeff decided to stay longer by himself and he landed that monster.
