You guys are truly going to have the time of your life. Looks like you are no stranger to saltwater fishing, so you'll be one step ahead of anyone else. One tip I have for Halibut- don't let them get on top of the water. I have seen more halibut lost up top than I care to remember. Try to keep them about 5 feet under the surface until the gaffman is ready, but don't lose tension on the fish. Also, hang on, I had a 90lb fish up to the boat last summer that as soon as it saw the boat, dove back down to 220' feet in literally 5 seconds, my reel was billowing smoke from the drag. That was the most amazing thing ever fishing. 220' in 5 seconds with a 14lb drag.

Hi Jason, I'm Fishcakes bother in-law and I'm going to Alaska with Bob. Thanks for the information and can't wait to fish in your great state.

Spreaders will probably be for bait rigs, yes herring is the ticket. Sounds like you'll be in some heavy currents with a lot of lead on your rigs to get them to stay down. They will be using circle hooks and letting the Halibut hook themselves. Is that a one Halibut per person area or is it 2 there? Regardless, if you get bored with how they are doing it, or just want to try something different, tell your captain. They are usually willing to let you try something else. If you limit out right away, ask to catch some rockfish or something else, you need bang for your buck coming from that far away! Remember to take lots of pictures, and savor every moment, most fisherman never get the chance to fish here. Let us know how your trip goes, and feel free to ask me questions. Also, check out the Alaska outdoors forum fishing section. You will get all questions answered immediately by true pro's!

A flight from Oregon can't cost that terribly much. Start saving your quarters. Sounds like the salmon fishing down there is in bad shape, isn't it? It's sad when that happens, living on the north shore of Lk. Superior before this I watched the king salmon runs get worse every year for ten years until 2007. Four Kings came up my favorite stream in 2007, yes FOUR....figured it was a good time to move to Alaska!

Good old D-town. I do miss the ice fishing, Lester river, and all my honey holes. Seriously, only cost me $640 round trip from Kodiak to Minneapolis. If you don't mind eating fish and venison, food cost is not bad. Bring your own bottle of booze, expensive here, and prepare to bring back as much Salmon and Halibut as you care to. You can catch a year's worth in a week.
